The term “oil canning” is often used in the metal cladding industry.
Oil canning is the visible distortion or waviness that can occur with standing seam metal roof and wall panel systems.
Most important is to understand that this is not a defect in the metal.
It is a characteristic of each thin gauge material and system that shows on wide panels.
While in Europe, where most of the cladding systems originate from, it is perfectly acceptable, here in Australia we have come to want/expect that all cladding installations have very minimal face-distortion.
Different design elements can be taken to reduce the amount of oil canning.
